Want to rent a boat? Pilgrim Paddles does not rent but can refer you to an outfitter who does. Here are some guidelines to renting a boat:
Make sure the rental floats after capsizing. If pictures show kayaks without rubber deck hatches, it has to have sufficient inflatable or other kinds of flotation inside. If it only shows them from the stern be sure the boat has flotation inside. Be sure a boat without flotation inside has a wall behind the seat and better yet also in front of the footrests. Rubber deck hatches allow access to these air chambers. Boats that 10’ long or less and some brands like Viper, Pelican, SunDolphin, Oru, and Coleman are known not to float after a capsize. These boats as well as some others such can be difficult to empty and re-enter in deep water. Competent outfitters will equip box store boats with flotation. Styrafoam, ethafoam, etc are not flotation but rather structural support. Sit-on boats have closed areas often with a drain - be sure there's a working plug!
Sit-in or sit-on, boats should be clean and in good working order. Footpegs should slide readily, and, if equipped, skegs or rudders should go up and down from the cockpit.
Don’t move invasive species.
Be sure its registered as required in the state of use.
Be sure you have the accessories you need: lifejacket, paddle, spray skirt, helmet, etc. High quality accessories are a good sign.
Don't drag boats!
Don't use a paddle leash. Lines are prone to catching in things like trees and rocks, especially if they have knots. If you think you need a line, you definitely need swiftwater training to learn how to handle it safely.
Ask about fees. Most likely you'll be liable for any repairs needed after you return the boat so ask before leaving the outfitter to avoid surprises when you return the boat(s).
You cqn still enjoy a successful outing with a subpar boat but the risk is higher and if there is an incident it will make rescue more difficult. Whether the boat is rented, borrowed, or your own, you still want to dress appropriately and have sufficient knowledge to use the craft safely
